Project Description

Describe the location and your goals for your Decorative Crosswalk. The focal point of Chinatown's grand entrance at Cesar Chavez and Broadway is a large Dragon Gateway spanning six lanes of vehicular traffic. The Gateway features a traditional Chinese subject matter of two celestial dragons chasing a large luminous pearl while misters and lighting effects simulate the effect of clouds. When the gateway was built, with only one senior housing project at this intersection, no pedestrian usage meant there wasn't an emphasis on the pedestrian experience. With the construction, and soon completion, of housing projects now at each and every corner of this intersection complete with street level retail, we are hoping to update our "Grand Entrance" to emphasis and enhance the pedestrian experience. Our hope would be to use traditional East Asian colors and design motifs to complement the current gateway so that visitors using all modes of transportation feel the warmest welcome to Chinatown.
