Describe the location and your goals for your Parklet or Plaza. |
LOCATION:
117 Bimini Place. Plaza will be on Bimini Place, from W. 1st Street, extending approximately 400 ft south to the alleyway before 2nd Street
GOALS:
Continue the implementation of the vision and purpose of the Los Angeles Eco-Village demonstration project, begun in 1993 in the two block Bimini/White House Place neighborhood, by "reinventing how we live in the City, manifesting higher quality living patterns at lower environmental impacts," as well as the further manifestation of the 2001 SNAP Specific Plan (Station Neighborhood Area Plan, a part of the General Plan City of Los Angeles), specifically to:
- Establish a clean, safe, comfortable and pedestrian [and bicycle] oriented community environment for residents … to use the public community services in the neighborhood.
- Create a transit friendly area by requiring conformance to pedestrian oriented design guidelines
- Encourage creation of a lively civic atmosphere by facilitating …and promoting cultural districts, facilities and services.
- Promote the provision of more small public parks among the residential neighborhoods.
- Transform some neighborhood streets into shared streets thereby creating safer routes to schools and transit, adding to the public green space…replacing asphalt with porous surfaces and decreasing the urban heat island effect.
ADDITIONAL GOALS INCLUDE:
- Demonstrating the next step in our 5 to 7 year plan to become a two block car-light/car-free, pedestrian and bicycle oriented neighborhood
- Expand on-going neighborhood programmatic activities in the space and establish neighborhood-supported new activities.*
* Currently, our three nonprofit partner organizations provide these activities: regular neighborhood street cleanups, weekly free music lessons on the sidewalk, 2 to 3 times a month car-retraining exercises in the intersection of Bimini and White House Place, a variety of bicycle events that meet on the street or in front of 140 Bimini Pl Relampago Wheelery, street tree care, yoga classes in-doors, vegetarian potlucks occasionally on the street and regularly indoors, film events currently indoors, karaoke and open mics currently indoors, public talks currently indoors, public outdoor free neighborhood library, regular public tours, arts and crafts workshops currently indoors.
We have plans to expand our programming in the proposed Plaza to include all of the above, plus a weekly farmers' market, zumba lessons, regular community health fair and seed exchange.
