Describe the location and your goals for your Decorative Crosswalk. |
This is a project partnership of the Motor Avenue Improvement Association and the Palms Neighborhood Council. The proposed location is at the entrance to Palms at Motor Avenue and Venice Blvd. At the intersection, Palms ends and Culver City begins. This intersection is along the regional major Bike Path connecting Santa Monica to Venice, Mar Vista, Culver City, Palms and Downtown Los Angeles. The street was formally overseen by Cal Trans and was just recently deeded to the City of Los Angeles. Along with the transfer of ownership Cal Trans also provided 40 million dollars for street improvements. We are only requesting technical assistance and ultimate approval for the Decorative Crosswalk and will request funds for this project from the Cal Trans funds provided to the city.
This location is on the southern edge of the Palms Neighborhood and serves as an entrance to the community for those exiting Culver City, MarVista and Venice. There are two dozen restaurants and retail establishments on the immediate corners of the intersection in one of the densest and diverse communities in the city.
There are three goals for the Decorative Crosswalk:
1. Create a Gateway. The Palms neighborhood has suffered from a lack of community identity when compared to its neighbor Culver City. The decorative crosswalk would serve as a visual cue that you are entering the Palms neighborhood as well as displaying neighbors pride.
2. Increase Safety. There are thousands of pedestrians accessing Palms through this intersection daily. There is a major bike path and is served by rapid and all the major bus services. We were successful in installing left hand turn lanes and lights in what had been a very dangerous intersection. This effort with accentuate the safety program we have currently.
3. Promote Connections to Motor Avenue. Motor Avenue is a commercial district. The decorative crosswalk design would put pedestrians on their way to Motor Ave. and the heart of the Palms Neighborhood.
