Describe the location and your goals for your Decorative Crosswalk. |
This is a partnership between the Motor Avenue Improvement Association and the Palms Neighborhood Council. The proposed location is at the entrance to the Metro Palms Expo Line station, just south of the I-10 Freeway. at National Blvd. At the intersection, Palms Blvd ends, Exposition Blvd. begins, and National Blvd. bends north. This intersection is along the regional Expo Bike Path connecting Santa Monica to Downtown Los Angeles. Most of the intersection can be seen from above at the elevated Metro Expo line platform.
This location is on the northern edge of the Palms Neighborhood and serves as an entrance to the community for those exiting the freeway or the rail station. There are several restaurants and retail establishments on the immediate southeast corner of the intersection and an office building on the south-west corner. Multi-family housing surrounds the southern half of the intersection area in one of the densest and diverse communities in the city. The north side intersection is partially covered by the Expo and 1-10 freeway bridge.
There are three goals for the Decorative Crosswalk:
1. Create a Gateway. The Palms neighborhood has suffered from a lack of community identity when compared to its neighbor Culver City. The decorative crosswalk would serve as a visual cue that you are entering the Palms neighborhood as well as displaying neighbors pride.
2. Increase Safety. There are thousands of pedestrians accessing Palms Station daily. There is no designated parking for the station, so the majority of Expo riders make there way to the station on foot, bike, or scooter. At the same time, drivers are eager to access the 1-10 freeway ramps just north of the intersection, resulting in them often blocking the crosswalks. A decorative crosswalk would make drivers aware of and respectful of pedestrians coming to and from the Expo station.
3. Promote Connections to Motor Avenue. Motor Avenue is a commercial district that is a 6-minute walk from the intersection. The decorative crosswalk design would put pedestrians on their way to Motor Ave. and the heart of the Palms Neighborhood.
