Describe the location and your goals for your People St project. Example: This proposed parklet will use two spaces in front of a Walgreens, and will create much-needed seating for shoppers in the neighborhood." |
Westwood Village needs a place for people to gather to experience community, events, and programming. The goal of the Broxton Avenue Plaza is to convert a partially-realized pedestrian street into a fully activated car-free venue where the Westwood Village Improvement District can program music, screen outdoor movies, and other fun activities while providing relaxing open space for the people who live, work, and play in the district. The Broxton Avenue Plaza will also be the home of the Westwood Village Farmers Market.

Description of additional community outreach activities |
Westwood Village has a unique demographic, surrounded by people of diverse backgrounds, whether they work in the Village, live in the communities surrounding the Village, or attend UCLA. A successful plaza will portray Westwood Village in a new light for those who find it difficult to envision the full potential of the area. This plaza will demonstrate the power of dedicating public space for the purpose of bringing the community together.
The WVIA will provide local strategies for outreach and participation, such as business outreach, print and e-newsletters, social media (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Blog), surveys, engagement at events (i.e. Farmers' market), and engage with local organizations (i.e. Westwood Neighborhood Council and homeowner association groups).
The proposed plaza will encompass activities appropriate for people of all age groups with various targeted programs and events. By providing the necessary elements to produce an environment conducive for the comfort and enjoyment of the public realm, residents and visitors will experience a newfound appreciation for Westwood Village.

Notes or comments |
The proposed Plaza will be located south of the Broxton Avenue Public Parking structure, which has a working alleyway that is parallel to the proposed Plaza area. Currently, the alleyway is one-way going north. The alley entrance is located below the proposed plaza area and would need to be rerouted for vehicles to enter from the other direction (making it a southbound alley). The alley has been successfully rerouted every Thursday for the Westwood Village Farmers' Market for many years.

Proposed Programming (required for plaza applicants)
Programming
Narrative description of proposed programming: |
Westwood Village is a vibrant local community, but it lacks a centralized venue and meeting place. The Broxton Avenue Plaza will create a mini-park centrally located in the heart of Westwood Village with colorful tables, chairs, and umbrellas for shade. It will be free to use, and open to the public. Programming and events will include live music, health events, dance festivals, kids and family events, art walks, art fairs, Westwood community days, pet events, UCLA partnered events, outdoor movies, and other fun activities. The Broxton Avenue Plaza will be the home of the weekly Westwood Village Farmers’ Market, and it will also provide a relaxing open space for the people who live, work, and play in the district to hang out an enjoy the Village’s welcoming atmosphere.
