Please explain the purpose of this event and why it is important for the City to co-sponsor this event |
The Institute for Public Strategies facilitates the Safer Weho Coalition, a grassroots initiative to reduce and prevent substance use related harms in the West Hollywood area. The Coalition, as well as the Institute for Public Strategies, has a long history of providing innovative and interactive programming that provides a safe and healthy alternative to partying in a city with a high concentration of alcohol on sale retailers. We are excited to announce “Slay the Night: Harm Free Drag Bingo”! The aim of this event is to provide a fun and safe space for community building and social networking. The event will feature meal sharing, Drag Queen Bingo, facilitated conversations, and a fun holiday and winter atmosphere. The main impetus of this event is to destigmatize the pursuit of resources such as Narcan, Cal Fresh, Metro, and harm reduction tools by offering them in a fun and casual atmosphere. The intended audience is populations that often ignore community events because of stigmatized perceptions of resource access. We are excited to host this alongside amazing partners who sit on a coalition with us, such as Being Alive, LA LGBT Center, LACADA, Just Don’t Die, The Wall Las Memorias, and more. The support of the city would be a tremendous help in bringing this event to fruition.
|
How does this event benefit the West Hollywood community and/or the City? |
IPS has implemented risk-reduction measures to lessen alcohol and meth’s dramatic impact in West Hollywood. In partnership with the city, IPS hosts and participates in alcohol- and drug-free events that attract thousands of residents annually. IPS and its community partners regularly distribute fentanyl strips and Narcan to WeHo residents and would do so at this event, along with promoting other community resources.
