Please explain the purpose of this event and why it is important for the City to co-sponsor this event |
After the rousing success of last year's inaugural Circa: Queer Histories Festival where thousands attended the month's programs, Circa is now established as an annual event. The first and only LGBTQ+ histories festival in the United States, Circa takes place during LGBTQ+ History Month, October 2024 (avoiding the oversaturation of Pride season) as a month-long, West Hollywood and LA County-wide programming series showcasing the trailblazing history and vibrant cultural contributions of the LGBTQ+ community through the lens of present-day challenges and triumphs. Spanning the arts, humanities, politics, and culture, Circa is a deeply collaborative festival featuring queer, trans, and allied thinkers and doers leading the movement for LGBTQ+ rights and liberation at a time of heightened attacks against LGBTQ+ communities, and on the heels of a Presidential election that may have devastating consequences on queer and trans people nationwide.

How does this event benefit the West Hollywood community and/or the City? |
One Institute has a long history of cultural arts programming in West Hollywood, including as tenants of the One Gallery on Robertson Blvd where we hold LGBTQ+ history programming for youth and adults throughout the year. The Circa Festival debuted in 2023 and is returning, now as an annual event. Dozens of programs (readings, screenings, performance, exhibitions, workshops, lectures, dialogues, and multi-media events) will take place throughout Los Angeles with a special concentration in and around West Hollywood, including at our partner organization, the LA LGBT Center. This year, Circa will also include a West Hollywood 40th Anniversary preview event in collaboration with Mayor John Erickson which is in development.
As the most important queer neighborhood in Los Angeles, West Hollywood is a cultural destination for LGBTQ+ people and allies. The Circa Festivals programs will draw thousands of attendees from across the region. Last year around 3500 people attended Circa programs. This year we are estimating 5000 or more will attend throughout the month of October.
