Please explain the purpose of this event and why it is important for the City to co-sponsor this event |
Thank you City of West Hollywood City Mr. Mayor, Madame Vice Mayor, and Councilmembers for your generous support of the 2023 TransVagina Diaries performances produced by HollywoodNOW and co-sponsored by the City of West Hollywood. It is only through your generous support of the trans community through the co-sponsorship of the TransDiaries from the City of WeHo, that WeHo continues to lead the nation in providing a safe place to live, work and/or play for all people.
We are interested in the City of WeHo co-sponsoring the Trans Diaries (new title) for a November 2024 Transgender Awareness Month event. Possibly the weekend of November 8/9, 2024?
The TransVagina Diaries was originally commissioned by the City of WeHo in 2020 through a Transgender Arts Initiative Grant and was produced by John Erickson and the HollywoodNow Chapter and had never had a live performance. It's sister production is the Vagina Monologues which is produced annually on VDAY in February by NOWHollywood. All of the original promotional materials, many YouTube video teasers with each actor are available here:

The original TVD's production was rehearsed both in Plummer Park and in City Council Chambers for two performances March 14, 15, 2020 in observation of National Women's History Month (March) and the International Transgender Day of Visibility, held annually on March 31.
The TransVagina Diaries had a tech and dress rehearsal March 8, 2020 before it was cancelled on Thursday March 12, 2020. The cast assembled for a Zoom production which was recorded immediately Saturday April 4, 2020. The script is attached and the link to that performance is here: https://youtu.be/ff9YwZpOWXI
Both the Women's Advisory Board and Transgender Advisory Board supported and co-sponsored the online performances broadcast by the City a year ago and that certainly is my hope for the live performances this year as well.
To produce the Trans Diaries we'd need a budget to compensate the writers/actors, directors and tech folx for two full weeks of rehearsal, tech and dress rehearsals along with any graphic designs and marketing help needed for promotion.
Our hope would be to produce and perform it in the WeHo City Council Chambers where it was birthed.

How does this event benefit the West Hollywood community and/or the City? |
For the record, no one had shared these stories. Until last year...for the very first time. In WeHo City Council Chambers.
Up unto that point in time we had been forbidden to discuss them in public, because of all of the violence and politics that go with it. Any artistic performance, display or exhibition of trans/intersex or non-binary people’s privates had been just that.
Private. Taboo. Shunned.
At this time in our country's history, July 2024; when anti-trans legislation is centered in state houses across America, it is crucial to provide the time, space and resources to share trans stories of joy, personal empowerment and action. Our goal is for trans artists to take our bodies back; to exercise our right and privilege to sing, create and display them openly; to share our own unique stories and experiences musically and visually with you, while at the same time fiercely empowering trans voices and using them as agents of change.
It’s crucial to create safe, inclusive spaces and major roles on main stages for professional trans and non-binary performers.
The love that ultimately bonds us one to one another should not be threatened in any way by cultural and societal norms of gender identity or gender expression. The wonderful, multi faceted rainbow that is humanity, is perfect in all of its manifestations, including ours.
The November 11/12, 2023 HollywoodNOW/WeHoCity Trans Diaries performances were very successful in creating partnerships with the National Organization for Women, Hollywood Chapter; the City of West Hollywood's City Council, the Women's Advisory Board, the City of West Hollywood's Transgender Advisory Board, the 2022 National Transgender Visibility March, the Unique Women's Coalition and many other organizations and individuals.
Last year in 2023, 300 individual ticket reservations were made through Eventbrite and both performances were very well attended. We are looking forward to this year's November 2024 production with great trans joy!!!
