Please explain the purpose of this event and why it is important for the City to co-sponsor this event |
For over 120 years, the American Lung Association has championed lung health through education, advocacy, and research, falling into three focus areas: 1) tobacco control, 2) air quality, and 3) lung disease management and prevention.
The Lung Association recognizes the higher rates of commercial tobacco use and related lung diseases among the LGBTQ+ community. The Lung Association's role in tobacco control for LGBTQ+ communities involves developing and implementing tailored health education programs, advocacy for inclusive policies, partnerships with LGBTQ+-serving organizations, tailored cessation programs, raising awareness about health disparities, and supporting research and data collection efforts. These initiatives aim to reduce tobacco use and improve lung health outcomes within the LGBTQ+ community.
“For decades, Big Tobacco has preyed on the LGBTQ+ community, targeting us through their marketing campaigns, getting us hooked on their deadly products. The result? LGBTQ+ people are more than TWICE as likely to smoke as our non-LGBTQ+ peers, and nearly 30,000 LGBTQ+ people across the country die every year of tobacco-related causes.” Out Against Big Tobacco California
Community Connections, a virtual townhall series offers much needed education and resources to all residents in West Hollywood from the comfort and safety of their home, school, work and/or other. Our panel of medical and industry experts will offer a relatable and easy-to-understand conversation around anti-tobacco and anti-vaping in the LGBTQ+ community, while maintaining a professional level with ABC7 as its moderator.
We believe that our strong ties to the community (2/3 of our development staff reside in West Hollywood), and their decades-long relationships in the community position us to launch this Community Connections in the influential city of West Hollywood. With our expected success with this model, we plan to roll it out across LA County, Inland Empire and perhaps even the country through our National DEI LGBTQ+ workgroup.

How does this event benefit the West Hollywood community and/or the City? |
The LGBT community has been actively courted by the tobacco industry through sponsorship and advertising. Tobacco companies were among the first advertisers to recognize LGBT people as a specific market. Unfortunately, this recognition led to increased marketing of their deadly and addictive products. Lyon-Martin Women’s Health Services
After meeting with a local policy maker, who is also a mother of two teenagers, it was made clear that the importance of educating children at the 4th and 5th grade level – before the peer pressure of middle school could sway a young person’s decision - NOT to take up this deadly habit.
This education resource will be take place via zoom for all residents of West Hollywood to attend. In addition, this will then be a permanent recording on YouTube as well as our national website, lung.org so parents, educators young persons alike can gain access to this life-saving information at any time which can lead to saving these young lives.
Organizations that have expressed interest and support of our mission and/or this project to educate and protect youth in West Hollywood include West Hollywood Elementary, Pavillions WeHo (highest producing Pavillions location nationwide due to its committed LGBTQ+ customer base), Hamburger Mary’s, WeHo Chamber, Cedars Sinai, Out Against Tobacco California, LA County and CTPP.
All this said, with over 300 students at West Hollywood Elementary, the short-term benefit can be to save a beloved child's life. The long -term benefit is to protect the future leaders of this community.
