Please Provide a 1-2 Paragraph Narrative Describing the Design Concept |
Please accept this letter as a submission for the Village of Richmond mural. My preference is for the Broadway site for the 3 panel option, and main street for the Bison grazing option. I am an American artist best recognized for my representational landscape paintings and public artworks. My paintings depict cityscapes, natural locations, and wildlife. I’ve created public artworks for the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation which is a non profit association. I created a The William P. Fahey Horse of Honor in 2014 and a Chicago Blackhawks themed K9 in 2017. In my experience I found public art to be somewhat of a collaborative project working with the organizers, promoters, handlers and the vendors. I painted a Horse of Honor which is a public art exhibit for families of Chicago police officers who have been killed or injured in the line of duty. Each horse was designed and painted by Chicago artists. We each had a budget and timeline to work within. I worked with a sponsor (Chicago Sports and Novelty) on creating a Chicago themed horse through discussions and sketch ideations. My horse has the Chicago flag which is blue and white stripes with red stars in the middle running alongside the horse. I hand painted the Chicago city skyline rising out of the blue of the flag on the neck of the horse. The sponsors grandfathers police badge number is on the front leg of the horse. I applied a urethane gloss sealant to protect the art from harsh weather elements as it was exhibited outside. I recorded myself painting with time lapse photos and a videographer of the creation of my horse from start to finish. I’ve created murals for businesses and residential, including Oak Park mini murals, Wheaton College, and the Atrium Garden Center.
I envision creating a public artwork that highlights the wildlife refuge and scenic McHenry landscapes. I will include some of the endangered species that are helped by the prairie restoration including the Monarch Butterfly and White Egret. The mural will have 3 different scenes. A closeup of a monarch butterfly in front of white flowers. A scenic landscape in the middle. On the other end a closeup of a White Egret.
Another option is a mural of the bison grazing area at Pleasant Valley Conservation Area in Woodstock. When I traveled to Yellowstone National park I saw herds of bison and painted them. I can paint a mural depicting Americas Mammal. One large bison in the foreground looking out to a herd of bison in the mid to background area.
For me creating public artwork is a privilege and an honor. My goal is to draw the viewer in and connect with the beauty of the natural world. It is my hope that an appreciation of nature’s diversity will lead people to conserve the resources of the earth. I believe that Public Art can be a powerful tool in society. It has the ability to transform the site and the viewer. If chosen my artwork will contribute to the visual landscape and highlight the McHenry conservation.
