One of my first art jobs after graduating from two fine art schools, the Art Institute of Chicago and Viterbo in LaCrosse, was in Richmond working for Eugene Derden of Perspecto Map Company. I fell in love with Richmond decades ago.
I've spent my career illustrating, writing, and designing for the Chicago Wilderness region. I know how special and iconic the sandhill cranes have become to the area. The thrill of hearing their prehistoric calls above, long before seeing them, and then spotting their long lankiness in the open fields never loses its joy.
My submission combines visual elements that make Richmond and the surrounding area iconic—a beautiful orange and periwinkle sunset, the horizon broken by native forbs and grasses, and of course, sandhill cranes in flight.
It would be an honor to paint this mural for Richmond, a town I have deep and long-reaching ties with. Envision my mural in either location, this mural would make people smile.
**** My sketch is a concept sketch. The birds and grasses will be more finely rendered. The lighting and feel will be just what I have presented. : )
