In the neighborhood of Brighton Heights, the Allegheny Land Trust (ALT) is undertaking the design and redevelopment of the former St. John’s Health and Hospital Center site located at 3325 and 3339 McClure Street. This project provides a cost-effective opportunity for creating a multi-use natural area that will incorporate stormwater capture as well as passive recreation options for the surrounding neighborhood. The site is terraced with a gently sloping upper area located along Flemming Ave and another gently sloping lower area located along McClure Ave. The upper and lower are separated by a steep wooded slope and existing retaining wall, with an existing walking trail connecting the two areas. The existing drainage patterns allow most of the site and off-site drainage area to be controlled by several onsite private inlets which eventually connect to the 60" PWSA main line that runs diagonally through the site. The site is currently utilized as a passive recreation area for the local neighborhood of Brighton Heights. The proposed site plan aims to formalize the current site uses as a passive recreation area that will also provide stormwater management for localized stormwater runoff. The project will alter two small areas of the existing site, consisting of a parking area alteration on the upper portion of the site, and a rain garden installation with adjacent trail on the lower portion of the site.
