Briefly describe your audience(s) and mission as an artist or organization. |
Eileen Riestra was born and raised on the island of Puerto Rico. Her work is inspired by the color vibrancy of the Caribbean. She has a B.F.A. Degree in graphic design from The New England School of Art and Design at Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts and has a Master's Degree from Boston University.
Eileen’s voice, while doing art, is to embrace the humanity of those who have suffered injustices, racism, and mistreatment by emphasizing their uniqueness. Her art projects their cultures not as masses but instead as individuals, each with their own story to share. Empowering immigrants has been her mission since moving to America. She captures the potential of diverse immigrant talents and highlights their culture through her art and creativity as a way of enriching a new America. Through her work, she messages that America wouldn’t be what it is today if it wasn’t for the melting pot of beautiful cultures joining together.
In the words of Eileen, "WE ARE ALL MEANT FOR GREATNESS!"

Briefly describe the project that will take place. |
I am proposing a mural project titled, “La Calle Esperanza” (Hope Street), on Ash Street, Chelsea, MA. The idea behind this project is to have a vibrant cultural mural that celebrates the history and culture of the Hispanic community in the city of Chelsea. It's a unique way to showcase the diversity and richness of the community, and to promote inclusivity, diversity, and amplify an appreciation of the Latin culture and contributions the Hispanic community has had to the city, state, and nationally. Chelsea’s rich cultural diversity includes nationalities from all parts of the world, across different continents and includes well over 25 languages. Our community members are from the following countries: Honduras, El Salvador, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Puerto Rico. As a proud Puerto Rican artist, I would incorporate elements of the Puerto Rican culture while also embracing the other Central American countries that have also been an integral part of Chelsea’s heritage. “La Calle Esperanza” Mural Art Project on Ash Street is an opportunity to showcase the work of talented Latinos that often go unnoticed or at times, underappreciated while supporting the revitalization of a historically significant neighborhood. Through this mural project, I intend to demonstrate a hint of the festivities in Puerto Rico and its culture and bring its color and vibrancy to the streets of our beloved town of Chelsea. The mural will portray colorful colonial houses with the flags of Honduras, El Salvador, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Puerto Rico. The left side of the mural wall will have the words “We are meant for Greatness” surrounded by tropical plants and flowers. Overall, celebrating the Hispanic history and culture in Chelsea is a great way to promote diversity and inclusion in the community, and to help people appreciate the many different cultures that make up our society. My goal is to create a vibrant mural that captures the spirit of Latin culture and commemorates its richness. > Additional information is included in this proposal with more information for this project.

What benefit(s) will this project bring to Chelsea and its residents? How do you expect to engage the community? |
With this project, we will offer an unparalleled opportunity for Chelsea's Hispanic artists and minority youth to display their artistic talent while supporting the community's revival. It is our goal that this initiative will allow us to recognize and appreciate the potential of the residents of Chelsea. Additionally, it provides a platform for people in Chelsea to embrace and celebrate local talent. The mural project will create an inviting space for the residents of Chelsea to come together, engage, and connect with one another. We expect to engage the community by hosting a Mural Launch Party Event, during which we will block off the street so Chelsea's vibrant Latinx community can come together for an inviting time of interaction and connection. Our goal is to provide a safe and exciting environment that celebrates the diversity of cultures in our neighborhood. Additionally, we plan on reaching out to local organizations and businesses that could potentially help us promote this event. Lastly, it will beautify the neighborhood and will prevent graffiti from occurring in this huge neglected wall. Residents and business owners will take pride in a mural that represents them and will take care of the mural.
|
Are you partnering and/or collaborating with other organizations? If so, name the organization(s) and their role(s) in the project. |
Yes, we plan to partner with youth from GreenRoots they will support mural artist with installation of the mural and the installation of the Butterfly Sky Art.
|
Acknowledgement of the Chelsea Heritage Celebrations Grant by the CCC is mandatory on all advertisement and promotions. How do you plan to accomplish this? Be specific. |
We will acknowledge the Chelsea Heritage Celebrations Grant by the CCC on every channel of communication we use to promote the mural as well as event. For instance, the logo will be included on any messaging via social media, press release, and flyers. Flyers & Posters will be placed in all convenient stores, bodegas, City Hall, school bulletin boards, and a part of the Discover Chelsea program run by the Chelsea Commerce (if approved). Lastly, we will give a certification of recognition to all who collaborate with us in this project. We hope to also promote in Hispanic
Media channels to reach a broader audience.
|
How will you measure the success/impact of this project? |
We anticipate that “La Calle Esperanza" Mural Art Project will help stimulate new businesses, create an opportunity of rehabilitation of existing businesses, and represent an economic injection to the municipality. We also hope that this project contributes to an overall increase in foot traffic of local tourists and art-lovers alike in Chelsea's streets. We hope this will be an uplift in property value due to its aesthetic appeal. We will measure the success of the Mural Art Project by tracking the number of community members and visitors who engage with the project through a barcode that we will have in the description of the installation. We will track how many people attend our Mural Launch Party Event and any other events we may host. We will also survey participants after each event to gauge their satisfaction and collect feedback on ways to improve future opportunities. Additionally, we will measure public opinion by collecting data from social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc., which will allow us to get a better understanding of what people think about our project and whether or not it has had a positive impact on the community.
|
How will the project be modified if the entire amount is not awarded? Be specific. |
If the entire amount is not awarded for the Mural Art Project, we will modify the project so that it can still be successful with a smaller budget. First, instead of blocking off the street for our Mural Launch Party Event, we will limit attendance and focus on creating an online presence through social media platforms. By utilizing all available digital platforms to promote our event, we can reach a wider audience to generate interest and support in a cost effective manner. Furthermore, we plan to reduce expenses associated with the mural by collaborating with local businesses or organizations who are willing to sponsor either materials or labor in exchange for promotional opportunities during our events. These collaborations would allow us to secure resources at a lower cost than sourcing them solely on our own. Additionally, if time and resources are limited due to reduced funding, we will focus on completing only one mural instead of the Butterfly Sky Art within the same timeframe. This will ensure that the mural is given the attention and care it needs without sacrificing quality due to tight deadlines or reduced funding. Finally, even with limited funds available for this project, we are confident that these modifications will help us continue providing Chelsea’s minority with an opportunity for their work to be seen and appreciated by the community while preserving its cultural integrity.
