Briefly describe your audience(s) and mission as an artist or organization. Our audience is current and prior Chelsea residents, those with family ties to the city, Greater Boston residents interested in local history, the Greater Boston Jewish community, historic preservationists, and historians. Mission - The Walnut Street Synagogue is the center for Jewish history, education and culture serving Chelsea, Greater Boston and beyond and is the historic home of Congregation Agudas Sholom. • Preserve our historic landmark building that opened in 1909 and is on the National Register for Historic Places, tell the story of Jewish history in Chelsea and Greater Boston through tours and community events. • Promote Jewish education and provide cultural opportunities through in-person and virtual programs in collaboration with partners in the community and nationwide. • Through Congregation Agudas Sholom – hold traditional religious services, join with community partners for holiday celebrations and support Tikkun Olam (repair the world) projects in Chelsea and Greater Boston.
Briefly describe the project that will take place. There are two parts to the Chelsea Jewish Heritage Day project that will take place at Walnut Street Synagogue Tours/Open House - tours of our historic building (National Register of Historic Places -1993), highlighting artifacts relating to Chelsea’s deep Jewish history along with numerous plaques, poster boards, mosaics, books detailing the Jewish life in Chelsea and surrounding areas. We will also have on display Arnie Jarmak’s photos of life in Chelsea during the 1970s and 1980s (part of an earlier Chelsea Cultural Council grant project). Speaker - Rabbi Daniel Judson, PhD, Provost of Hebrew College, Newton, MA. Rabbi Judson’s topic will be Jewish immigration to Chelsea and Greater Boston in the late 19th and early 20th century and its impact on the community.
Outline how you plan to market your project and the timeline you intend to follow. In addition, outline the audiences you intend to reach (be specific). You may attach an additional document if necessary. We intend to reach out to residents of Chelsea, surrounding communities and throughout Greater Boston. We intend to reach out to the following publications: Chelsea Record (article and ads); Jewish Journal (article, event listing, and ads); Eventbrite; JewishBoston.com; Walnut Street Synagogue mailing list and website, Facebook page and weekly newsletter, Jews of Chelsea and other local Facebook pages. We plan to start promotion in May or June with more intense promotion 45 days prior to event date. We will also collaborate with the Chelsea Chamber of Commerce, of which we are members, to promote in their newsletter.
What benefit(s) will this project bring to Chelsea and its residents? How do you expect to engage the community? The tours of the synagogue will expose our historic building to community members who are not familiar with our house of worship and the role that we have played in the development of the city since 1909. Artifacts and historical items, along with our painted ceiling and Sam Katz Ark will allow visitors to travel back in time to an in-tact Immigration era synagogue and reflect what times were like in the last century in Chelsea when there were approximately twenty synagogues and the Jewish population was nearly 40%.
Are you partnering and/or collaborating with other organizations? If so, name the organization(s) and their role(s) in the project. We do not have any formal partners yet, but we plan to work with the Chelsea Chamber of Commerce (publicity) and the Wyner Family Jewish Heritage Center (publicity and promotional material including Jewish Neighborhood Voices).
Acknowledgement of the Chelsea Heritage Celebrations Grant by the CCC is mandatory on all advertisement and promotions. How do you plan to accomplish this? Be specific. Our advertisements and other promotional material, newspaper articles and online postings will identify and acknowledge that funding for this event is being provided by a Chelsea Heritage Celebrations Grant.
How will you measure the success/impact of this project? We will measure the success/impact of this project by the participation level (registrants/attendees) for the event. We will also survey participants for their feedback.
How will the project be modified if the entire amount is not awarded? Be specific. We will adjust our program budget accordingly. We will review our planned advertising, audio/visual rental, USPS mailing, and food and adjust spending accordingly. We will review our revenue and expenses on an ongoing basis.
