Briefly describe your audience(s) and mission as an artist or organization. Soccer Without Borders uses soccer as a vehicle for positive change, providing newcomer youth a toolkit to overcome obstacles to growth, inclusion, healing & personal success. We proactively engage & include newcomers through a holistic, evidence-based model that combines soccer with academic & language support, civic engagement, & cultural exchange activities. Soccer helps newcomers to feel confident, included, and valued. In a welcoming team environment led by a caring mentor-coach, our participants advance academically, develop personally, make healthy choices, build social capital, & develop English skills. Our inclusive environment supports newcomer youth to grow, integrate into their new lives & heal from past trauma.
Briefly describe the project that will take place. Copa de Paz is a soccer event to celebrate International day of peace on September, 21st. Soccer unites cultures; the goal of this event is to bring the colors, flavors, and languages of different countries and play soccer. We envision to meet everyone in a centric and open space such as the Hall City where we will have face painting, all participants and families will make art designs, bring flags and elements that promote peace in our community. Then, we will start a caravan and walk through the streets of Chelsea to get to the field (Highland Park) where we will have food, a soccer tournament for boys and girls for different ages, and the community will make a mural.
Outline how you plan to market your project and the timeline you intend to follow. In addition, outline the audiences you intend to reach (be specific). You may attach an additional document if necessary. Our direct target is to serve boys and girls from elementary through high school age groups. Our indirect target is the parents of the youth that will participate and be present in the event.
What benefit(s) will this project bring to Chelsea and its residents? How do you expect to engage the community? Copa the Paz will create an environment of peace and cultural exchange to promote overall tolerance in the City of Chelsea. Through including soccer in our event, we also seek to promote healthier habits and physical activity through youth and family engagement. Soccer is one of the most played sports around the world, especially areas in which many of the Chelsea population originally come from. We aim to use soccer as a universal language in this event.
Are you partnering and/or collaborating with other organizations? If so, name the organization(s) and their role(s) in the project. Acknowledgement of the Chelsea Heritage Celebrations Grant by the CCC is mandatory on all advertisement and promotions. How do you plan to accomplish this? Be specific. We will display a banner, share promotions on social media, and include Chelsea Heritage Celebrations Grant acknowledgement in our newsletter and on our website.
How will you measure the success/impact of this project? We will know we are successful if: -We engage 100 youth and their families in the event -We have 40% of the youth in attendance are girls -We retain at least 30% of the youth in attendance as participants in our year-round programming
How will the project be modified if the entire amount is not awarded? Be specific. If the entire amount is not awarded, we will still host the soccer tournament but we will remove some of the art, food trucks, and cultural elements of the event.
