Briefly describe your audience(s) and mission as an artist or organization. |
CineFest Latino Boston is committed to using the power of film to break stereotypes, bring cultures and communities together, and reveal the complex issues that affect the Latinx community in the United States and in Latin America and Spain. We are fiercely committed to showcasing local talent and sharing the stories of Latinx communities in greater Boston with film audiences both in and out of the community.
|
Briefly describe the project that will take place. |
Traditionally, CineFest Latino Boston has been held in venues that may not always be readily accessible to Latinx audiences. However, this year marks an exciting change as we introduce an inaugural kickoff screening of the festival, specifically taking place in Latinx communities – starting with the city of Chelsea. Our Executive Director and filmmaker, Sabrina Avilés, shares a unique connection with the city. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, she diligently documented the city's challenges, resulting in the poignant short documentary, "Raising the Floor."
“Raising The Floor” is the moving narrative of a majority Latinx community coming together to feed neighbors and strangers during an unprecedented public health crisis. It is the inspiring story of a group of local leaders whose sense of helplessness and concern led to bold policy innovation.
While the film is readily available on platforms such as Kanopy and other streaming services, we believe it is only fitting to host a community screening in Chelsea. This free screening not only brings the essence of the festival directly to the heart of the city but also serves as a tribute to Chelsea's unwavering resilience during one of its most challenging periods in history. It would mark the film’s first public screening in Chelsea, and we feel its celebratory spirit will align with the city's 400th anniversary and make it a truly special occasion for Chelsea audiences.

Outline how you plan to market your project and the timeline you intend to follow. In addition, outline the audiences you intend to reach (be specific). You may attach an additional document if necessary. |
CineFest will announce the screening in its monthly newsletter sent to its mailing list. CineFest will post promotional videos and images for the event on its social media sites beginning six weeks before the event. For the past four years, CineFest has worked with the public relations and marketing firm of Luca PR which ensures coverage of the event across all local English and Spanish language media outlets (GBH, The Boston Globe, Telemundo, to name a few). CineFest will make use of its community connections with arts organizations, community cultural organizations, and social action organizations to promote the event. Our Media Sponsor is EL PLANETA, and they cover much of the Spanish language markets. CineFest will also place advertisements in media (radio, newspaper, and online) that also reach our target audience in Chelsea and in the Greater Boston area.

What benefit(s) will this project bring to Chelsea and its residents? How do you expect to engage the community? |
The community, particularly the city government and the city’s social services organizations, were intimately involved in the filming and production of the film. The lead “characters” in the film are well-known personalities in the community, like former City Manager Tom Ambrosino and Gladys Vega, ED of La Colaborativa. Thousands of Chelsea residents were affected by the pandemic and approximately 2,000 families were assisted by the Chelsea food assistance program. The film both memorializes the history of this dramatic period in the city’s life and offers evidence of the effectiveness of a universal basic income policy to aid a community during hard times. It will be a meaningful experience for Chelsea and for other area residents to re-visit the pandemic and recognize how resilient and resourceful city officials and social workers were in responding to the crisis.
Throughout the filming process, filmmaker and Cinefest ED Sabrina Avilés, maintained close contact with the city, local organizations, and businesses, and hopes to engage them in spreading the word about the screening. Following the screening, we plan to host a talkback session, where filmmakers and community members featured in the film will share their insights and experiences. Most importantly, the screening will be free to the public.

Are you partnering and/or collaborating with other organizations? If so, name the organization(s) and their role(s) in the project. |
We are partnering with Appollonaire Theatre/Chelsea Theatre Works; they are the official venue of the screening. Devra Zabot/Clark City Creative, a Chelsea resident, will coordinate and assist us in producing the event. Finally, our equipment will be provided by High Output, a professional audio/video and event staging company.
|
Acknowledgement of the Chelsea Heritage Celebrations Grant by the CCC is mandatory on all advertisement and promotions. How do you plan to accomplish this? Be specific. |
CineFest routinely acknowledges its sponsor organizations in its promotional and advertising materials. This includes posters and both physical and digital postcards. The trailer used to promote the screening online will include acknowledgement of the Heritage Celebrations Grant. The screening will also include sponsor trailers with the grant acknowledgement, and all on-site promotional materials will include the Heritage Celebrations organization’s logo. If selected for sponsorship, the Chelsea Heritage Celebrations Grant acknowledgment will be prominently featured on CineFest's website (https://cinefestlatino.com).
|
How will you measure the success/impact of this project? |
CineFest routinely measures social media statistics and monitors other sites to capture the re-posting of event information. CineFest will measure attendance and monitor follow-up news reports and commentary on the event. CineFest will also survey attendees at the screening to capture reactions and comments to share in its completion report.
|
How will the project be modified if the entire amount is not awarded? Be specific. |
CineFest will curtail spending on paid media advertising and production of promotional materials. If necessary, CineFest will curtail amenities at the screening event (food, beverages).
