Briefly describe your audience(s) and mission as an artist or organization. My art is meant to be reliable to everyone of all backgrounds, I do a lot of work around diversity, and mental health awareness. I like making the things I do accessible and relatable to large crowds of people. This project in particular is something that I want to create awareness around Cuba, adding some perspective to it, encouraging travel, ending some of the stigma surrounding the taboo of Cuba, educating and reconnecting folks to Cuban roots.
Briefly describe the project that will take place. This project is meant to bring Cuba to the people of Chelsea. I want this to be an interactive exhibit that is more than just looking at art, but really reconnecting folks to Cuba. Starting with a lesson on how Cubans came to Chelsea in the 1960's and 70's during the second wave of Cuban immigration called Freedom Fights. Then touching base on Cuban history, Cuban landscapes, Cuban food - the cost of living over there, what people do with free time - an in depth juxtaposition of life in both places. There will be real video interviews I recorded with people from Cuba playing, artifacts bought back from Cuba - samples of money, etc, and artwork painted by Cubans. The goal is for people to feel comfortable with Cuba, to have learned and feel connected to it in the same way that I do.
Outline how you plan to market your project and the timeline you intend to follow. In addition, outline the audiences you intend to reach (be specific). You may attach an additional document if necessary. I intend to create a flyer for social media, and an event on social media starting in May, I then want to hang it up in Businesses and put it in local papers during the month of May - The Chelsea record, El Heraldo Latino. I then will do mini live streams generating interest online to showcase things being put together, as a teaser. Hopefully I can work with Chelsea Cable to put something on the Air and gear up with the senior center to do a mini drop in art session to create content for the exhibit. The goal is to target everyone in Chelsea, as well as the surrounding communities. The Cuban exhibit is something I think everyone can gain from, though I do intend to do a of outreach at Cuban food places and in Latino spaces. I am tying this exhibit in with Chelsea's 400th history - so I think a lot of marketing will be done partnered up with that committee.
What benefit(s) will this project bring to Chelsea and its residents? How do you expect to engage the community? This project benefits Chelsea because it is talking about a lesser talked about part of Chelsea's history - a lot of Latinos immigrated to Chelsea in the 60's and 70's, a large percentage were cubans - this wave of immigration turning the Latino population in the city all the way up to 14% by 1980. A lot of families blended during this time creating a lot of the population Chelsea currently has, this makes it really relatable to the community, as well as working to end the stigma around Cuba. It will bring Cuba to the people who cannot got to Cuba, giving them life experience and education that will foster conversations and spread knowledge and awareness. The perspective brought from the Cuban exhibit can work against the current societal expectations and hopefully reduce stress in folks who might be struggling or feeling overwhelmed.
Are you partnering and/or collaborating with other organizations? If so, name the organization(s) and their role(s) in the project. I am partnering with Chelsea 400th since this is a huge event in Chelsea History- their role would be networking, and publicity.
Acknowledgement of the Chelsea Heritage Celebrations Grant by the CCC is mandatory on all advertisement and promotions. How do you plan to accomplish this? Be specific. I will be adding logos to all marketing materials, including vocal acknowledgements during live sessions online or in art events during the city. I will also have a section in the Cuban exhibit talking about the Chelsea Heritage Celebrations Grant - it's history, and thanking them for any contribution.
How will you measure the success/impact of this project? I think I can measure success and impact by the amount of folks who participate in the events, or conversations. At the exhibit I will have a survey asking the same questions I asked the Cuban People - and also include a slot for them to rate the event and add one thing they've learned. But honestly, even doing this at all is monumental in the cuban community as "Cuba" comes with a lot of stigma as to what it means to live in Cuba so I think generating a healthy conversation in general will be a success.
How will the project be modified if the entire amount is not awarded? Be specific. I understand that this is asking for a large amount of money, and if I cannot be awarded all of it I will downsize on the amount of art I create and focus more on the things I've brought back from Cuba. I would downsize from a full gallery open for a month to a gallery that has one night a month pop ups for a few months in a row by renting a free community space (Chamber of commerce, Cary house, etc). I could consider charging 3 dollars for entry to the event to make back some costs, or instead of free food I would have paid food cart. was and I would cut back on hired participation - live music, exhibit greeters.
