Briefly describe your audience(s) and mission as an artist or organization. |
The audience is all ages and accessibilities with a focus on all Chelsea residents as well as the extended Jewish community from the North Shore with familial ties to Chelsea. This project was created specifically for the Chelsea 400th Celebration as part of Cary Square Day and will be held at Temple Emmanuel, one of the two remaining Jewish houses of worship in Chelsea. The mission of the Jewish Chelsea Museum at Temple Emmanuel is to immerse visitors in the lives and times of a vibrant, historical Jewish community and exemplify the role of storytelling in preserving the memories of an ethnic immigrant culture.
|
Briefly describe the project that will take place. |
The project will be a museum-style exhibit that tells the story of the Jewish people in Chelsea from just after WWI to just after WWII when the community was almost 50% of the city and the children of immigrants from Eastern Europe were beginning to find their footing as "Americans." Our project is a multi-media event that is interactive and inclusive and will include these elements:
1) History stations comprised of artifacts, ephemera, and personal memorabilia.
2) Video stories, oral histories, and Temple Emmanuel's Jewish Chelsea Museum website, all accessible on monitors and headsets.
3) A 15-minute film, Chelsea: The Jewish Years
4) Live storytelling events
5) Culturally relevant music
6) Culturally relevant food and non-alcoholic beverages
|
Outline how you plan to market your project and the timeline you intend to follow. In addition, outline the audiences you intend to reach (be specific). You may attach an additional document if necessary. |
Our marketing timeline is from March 1 through May 5, 2024. During that period, our project promotional plan includes the following:
1) Advertise the event in the newsletter that goes to Temple Emmanuel's email list.
2) Reach out to Chelsea's community organizations, religious institutions, schools, and potential sponsors.
3) Connect with Jewish organizations on the North Shore and in the Greater Boston area.
4) Post a promotional video on Chelsea Cable and Facebook and Instagram's Chelsea community pages.
5) Send press releases and flyers to Chelsea Cable, Chelsea Record, Jewish Journal, and Jewish Boston.
6) Engage reporters from the Chelsea Record and the Jewish Journal to write articles about the event and potentially cover the actual event.
Our project's target audiences are North Shore and Greater Boston Jewish households and every Chelsea household.
|
What benefit(s) will this project bring to Chelsea and its residents? How do you expect to engage the community? |
This project will benefit Chelsea and its residents and engage the community by contributing to its cultural vitality in at least four different ways:
1) Participating in the celebration of Chelsea's 400th Year by highlighting a specific time in Chelsea's history that many Chelsea residents might not know about.
2) Focusing on personal storytelling as an engaging way to convey or acquire a more intimate understanding of Chelsea's social and cultural history.
3) Inspiring the event attendees to think about storytelling as a way to share their ethnic group's history with the broader Chelsea community.
4) Creating an open, inclusive, and participative atmosphere where people from different backgrounds feel welcomed and comfortable.
|
Are you partnering and/or collaborating with other organizations? If so, name the organization(s) and their role(s) in the project. |
No, the temple is not partnering with other organizations on its Jewish Chelsea Museum's 4-hour storytelling open house.
|
Acknowledgement of the Chelsea Heritage Celebrations Grant by the CCC is mandatory on all advertisement and promotions. How do you plan to accomplish this? Be specific. |
All of Temple Emmanuel's promotional & marketing materials for its May 5th open house will explicitly acknowledge that the funding for the event was made possible by a Chelsea Heritage Celebrations Grant from the Chelsea Cultural Council. The Temple president's open house welcoming remarks will include this acknowledgment as well.
|
How will you measure the success/impact of this project? |
We will design and distribute a participant evaluation questionnaire in Spanish and English. Our final report will include an analysis of the questionnaire survey data. We will also create an anonymous Google survey to be sent out after the event for additional feedback and responses.
|
How will the project be modified if the entire amount is not awarded? Be specific. |
Depending on the amount of the award, we will cut back on or eliminate the musicians.
