Briefly describe your audience(s) and mission as an artist or organization. Boston Landmarks Orchestra builds community through great music. We produce free concerts and musical programming across the greater Boston area that hold diversity, equity, and inclusion at their core. Our signature program is our free summer concert series at the DCR Hatch Memorial Shell, which thousands attend each week. In 2023 88% of our repertoire was written by composers of color or women. We specifically target historical marginalized communities and work with them as artists, collaborators, and audience members. Authentic, reciprocal collaboration with diverse community partners is at the heart of Landmarks programs. Almost every concert has at least one partner on stage alongside the orchestra. In 2023, we worked with cuatrista Fabiola Méndez, who co-created a piece with students from the Hyde Square Task Force. They then performed this piece alongside the orchestra on the Hatch Shell stage. Traditional orchestra performances in a concert hall have unwritten rules, which can intimidate those who don’t know them and exclude people based on their income level or ability. At Landmarks concerts, it does not matter how you dress, when you clap, or if you move around during the performance. Through our longstanding Breaking Down Barriers initiative, we offer text-to-speech digital programs and ASL interpreters onstage, who communicate the feel and character of the music as the orchestra performs.
Briefly describe the project that will take place. Community Day is a free, family-friendly event with entertainment, activities, and food. We planned a similar event in 2023, but it was unfortunately cancelled due to severe weather. This year’s Community Day will follow last year’s model. We anticipate that the event will happen at PORT Park. The event will feature local arts organizations, potentially including Apollinaire Theatre, who was slated to be at 2023’s Community Day. Performances will be culturally relevant, and we will speak with contacts we have in Chelsea to better understand what Chelsea residents would like to see at this event. In addition to performances, there will be fun activities, like an instrument petting zoo where attendees can try out the violin, viola, or cello. There will be a face painting and attendees can munch on fun snacks such as cotton candy, popcorn, and cookies. The goal of Community Day is to provide a community gathering space where families and neighbors can spend an enjoyable, arts-focused summer afternoon together.
Outline how you plan to market your project and the timeline you intend to follow. In addition, outline the audiences you intend to reach (be specific). You may attach an additional document if necessary. Landmarks will market Community Day through various digital and physical means. All advertisements we create will be in English and Spanish, since we intend to reach the large population of Spanish-speakers in Chelsea. We also intend to reach families who are looking for a fun and arts-based Saturday afternoon activity. Digitally, we will run targeted ads on Facebook and Instagram that we will aim specifically at people in and around Chelsea. We will also reach out to various e-newsletters, including the Healthy Chelsea newsletter, asking them to help us promote. For other community events, we have hung flyers up at local businesses, which we’ve found to be quite successful. In addition to spreading the word about our event, we also get to know more about the people who run and frequent these businesses. Timeline Early Spring 2024 o Secure all necessary permits o Speak with connections in Chelsea to get recommendations for local artists/groups and how to make our event appealing to the largest amount of Chelsea residents Mid Spring 2024 o Begin reaching out to local artists/groups o Begin coordinating food, face painter, instrument petting zoo, and other activities Summer 2024 o Begin marketing our event online and through flyering campaign o Confirm final event details Event takes place on 8/10/24
What benefit(s) will this project bring to Chelsea and its residents? How do you expect to engage the community? Community Day will bring a fun and artistic afternoon to Chelsea families and residents. Community members will share in each other’s company while experiencing culturally-relevant, meaningful, and engaging performances and activities. We want to engage the Chelsea community as much as we can in the planning process, which is why we are planning on speaking with stakeholders we have connections with. These individuals have their fingers on the pulse of what Chelsea residents want and need from arts programming, and we are eager to hear their expertise. We will also engage Chelsea’s Spanish-speaking population through our Audience Service Representatives. The Representatives are a team of paid Landmarks staff who greet and assist attendees at all Landmarks events. Many of them are bilingual, including in Spanish, and we will utilize them to connect with Spanish-speaking attendees to make Community Day welcoming and accessible to all.
Are you partnering and/or collaborating with other organizations? If so, name the organization(s) and their role(s) in the project. While we have no confirmed partners yet, we plan on inviting local artists and arts organizations to participate as performers and set up informational tables. We will also hold informal conversations with partners in Chelsea around how to engage the most community members and for general recommendations. Landmarks will be in charge of planning and coordinating all elements of Community Day.
Acknowledgement of the Chelsea Heritage Celebrations Grant by the CCC is mandatory on all advertisement and promotions. How do you plan to accomplish this? Be specific. Landmarks will happily acknowledge the Chelsea Heritage Celebrations Grant and the CCC on all promotional materials related to Community Day. We will include the Grant and CCC’s logos and an acknowledgment on marketing emails, flyers, and webpage(s) about the event. We will also verbally acknowledge both the Grant and the CCC at the event itself during any introductory and closing remarks.
How will you measure the success/impact of this project? We will measure overall event attendance and will keep track of what activities/performances are the most attended. This will help inform us what we can do to improve Community Day going forward. We will also offer digital and hard-copy surveys in both English and Spanish. This qualitative data will tell us more about how Chelsea residents experienced Community Day – what they liked, disliked, and what they suggest going forward. Much of our impact happens within a person, so asking them to share externally paints a more complete picture of the impact we have.
How will the project be modified if the entire amount is not awarded? Be specific. If Landmarks does not receive full funding, Community Day may be less robust, meaning fewer performers or activities available. As we plan our event, we continue to look for other sources of funding to ensure that we can hold the most impactful and fun Community Day we can.
