Time of Project Boat Tour of Chelsea's Coastline
Is this a recurring project? No
If yes, what is the time period? Rain Date is 6/2/2024. Any additional funds would allow go toward a larger boat or an additional date. A similar boat tour has been organized by Greenroots in past years
Expected number of attendees 200
If a recurring project, number of attendees in prior years 40
Will your project utilize volunteers? Yes
If yes, please estimate the total number of volunteers and the number of hours donated 7
Briefly describe your audience(s) and mission as an artist or organization. Regarding Volunteers: 7 total (2 on the boat, 2 on the deck, 2 handling parking & directions, 1 taking tickets) plus 3+ speakers.
Briefly describe the project that will take place. See attached map. The plan is to do (5) back-to-back tours in a 6-hour period. Several speakers would cover a variety of topics concerning the past, present and future of this waterfront.
Outline how you plan to market your project and the timeline you intend to follow. In addition, outline the audiences you intend to reach (be specific). You may attach an additional document if necessary. 1. As soon as funding is secured, we would list the event on the Chelsea 400 website. 2. We would offer 40 FREE tickets (1 loop tour) to Chelsea Public School students. (these tickets can be distributed by Malik of the Superintendent's Office who is aware of this event). 3. We would offer 10 FREE tickets to the speakers and those volunteering for the event. 4. We would submit a brief article about the Tour to be published in The Chelsea Record to generate buzz. 5. We would submit a paragraph to be broadcast on WBZ Radio's Arts and Culture directing people to the Chelsea 400th website for more information. 6. Starting 4/1, I would have the Eventbrite go live. This starts a 2-month membership). 7. We would post fliers in key locations (the Chamber's Window, Market Basket, City Hall). The fliers could list the Eventbrite link for tickets. 8. We would hand out fliers on 4/11 the Battle of Chelsea Creek lecture. 9. We would circulate an email to Chelsea Residents with the Eventbrite link. 10. If there are still seats available on 5/15, we would expand the email advertising to Greenroots', MyRWA's, and the FBHW's networks. 11. If we still have tickets available, we would like to offer these to the people volunteering for other Chelsea 400 events.
What benefit(s) will this project bring to Chelsea and its residents? How do you expect to engage the community? This tour will be educational, and will be geared towards a variety of audiences: 1. CPS Middle School and High School Students. It is Malik's Office' goal to expose kids to a variety of careers. This tour would open their worlds to a number of different fields: Archeology, Public Policy, Urban Planning, Shipping, the Maritime Industry, Ecology 2. This will appeal to history buffs who are interested in learning more about Battle of Chelsea Creek, the native presence prior to 1624, and Winnisimmet Village, for instance. 3. Tour attendees about how Climate Change poses a threat to our coastline and the industries along it. 4. Chelsea residents will have a chance to see their waterfront as a wonderful asset and its potential.
Are you partnering and/or collaborating with other organizations? If so, name the organization(s) and their role(s) in the project. The Massachusetts Bureau of Underwater Archeology Greenroots Harborkeepers Climate Coalition Boston Harbor Regional Storm Surge Working Group The Mystic River Watershed Association Boston Harbor Now Friends of the Harborwalk Admiral's Hill Marina Chelsea Public Schools
Acknowledgement of the Chelsea Heritage Celebrations Grant by the CCC is mandatory on all advertisement and promotions. How do you plan to accomplish this? Be specific. Since we have limited seating capacity, I propose the event to be advertised on Chelsea's 400th webiste. A link would take you to the page showing graphics and logos of Heritage Celebrations Grant and the partner organizations and/or an, any additional sponsors. If there is strong demand, we would add another date and sell tickets at a higher rate if there is no other funding avaiable.
How will you measure the success/impact of this project? By the number of tickets reserved. By the number of partenering organizations. By the diversity of the audience of atendees- Are people coming from far and wide to be a part of this? Is there a brad range of ages? Is there interest in making this an annual event?
How will the project be modified if the entire amount is not awarded? Be specific. We will seek out donations from private sponsors to cover the downpayment to reserve the boat, and the remainder of the funds will be generated from advance ticket sales. If more funding becomes available, we would add a second boat to give alternating tours throughout the day. Any money generated can go toward other 400 Events.
