Please explain the purpose of this event and why it is important for the City to co-sponsor this event The events celebrating the 100th birthday of Fairfax High School will bring together the entire community in a celebration not only of the school itself, which has served so many members of the community, but also of the neighborhood, which has been a vibrant area of southern California over the past 100 years. The century has brought much change to the school and to the neighborhood, and these changes will be explored through a History Exhibit in the school’s landmark Rotunda; through a documentary film, to be premiered in the school’s magnificent 1926 Auditorium; through live music, to be performed by contemporary and tribute bands of the school’s alumni; through the creation of a Centennial mural by past and present Fairfax artists; and through the honoring of many of the school’s most accomplished alumni, all of whom have contributed to the community and to the wider world. Fairfax High School has had a particularly close connection to the City of West Hollywood for many years: First, two Fairfax alumni – Doug Routh ‘60 and Ruth Williams ‘53 – were among the founders of the City of West Hollywood; second, as West Hollywood has no public high school of its own, the city has “adopted” Fairfax as its high school; and third, many Fairfax students have been (or are now) residents of West Hollywood.
How does this event benefit the West Hollywood community and/or the City? A key element of the Centennial Celebration is the exhibit that will be displayed in the historic Rotunda (the only building on the campus that remains from the original school building). In exploring Fairfax’s history, we explore the history of the surrounding community as well and celebrate the diversity of the school (known as the most diverse school in Los Angeles) and its community – something that West Hollywood also symbolizes and celebrates. In fact, the History Exhibit has been offered to the West Hollywood Library, portions of which will be displayed in the Library when the exhibit has ended its stay in the Rotunda.
Please list the names of all event participants (panelists, presenters, performers, speakers, lecturers, etc.) for each/all day(s) of the event: ---
