Subject of Proclamation or Commendation Subject of the proclamation is appreciation and recognition for the ministry of catholic religious sisters in this part of Pennsylvania for nearly 170 years.
Background or description of person or organization March 8th through 14th is Catholic Sisters Week in the United States. Bishop Lawrence Persico is holding a news conference to begin the week's celebration. He and others have been asked to give a proclamation at the news conference acknowledging the work of Catholic sister in Western Pennsylvania. Mayor Schember will be receiving an invitation to the Conference.
Description of program, initiative, or accomplishment Religious Sisters have served the diocese of Erie since 1852. Countless of us have been educated under their guidance in over thirty grade schools high schools and colleges. They have started hospitals, ministered in social service, rallied for peace initiatives provided housing for the homeless and served the poor unselfishly . They have truly improved the life of many in northwest Pennsylvania.
Explanation of how this person or organization impacts the Erie community Look around the city of Erie and you will see numerous initiatives that Sisters began and others they continue to support throughout Erie. St. Vincent Hospital, St. Mary's Home, Catholic Social Service, the Mercy Center for Women, Mercyhurst High School and University, the SSJ Neighborhood Network, the Neighborhood Art Center, Emmaus Ministries, Emmaus Soup Kitchen and Pantry, St. Patrick and St. James Haven Homeless Shelters.
