| Describe your idea and how it can help Santa Monica | Civil Pursuit is a platform for massive online deliberative discussion that employs processes derived from proven, facilitated in person deliberative discussion to make it possible for large numbers of diverse people to work together productively, online, quickly, inexpensively, and with more people over more space and time than is possible with physical meetings. We create 'deliberative surveys' that start with topic and a goal but where the content evolves as people participate and contribute. We can help Santa Monica reach the best possible solutions to the challenges it faces. By getting more minds looking at the problems, and ideating solutions, Santa Monica will get better outcomes, with more public support, than it could through small groups. This can be a tremendous aid to civic leaders and commissions charged with specific actions, or those charged with community engagement. Sometimes a community becomes polarized and oppositional to even the best intended solutions. Deliberative surveys allow leaders and their community in mass to engage with each other, at the early stages of the challenge, and get to better outcomes faster. |

| What needs to happen to launch your product? Please list all resources (hardware, software, licensing, legal/regulatory, funding, partnership or support from the City, data, etc.) required to launch your program. | Identify specific challenges (like within the Well Being Project) and challenge owners. Work with the challenge owners to design a deliberative survey that will lead people in a series of discussions the lead to accomplishing the goal. Implement the survey on Civil Pursuit. Send out the survey to the community, and engage online and offline programs to get people started on and sharing the survey. Watch the results as they accumulate on line. |
| How realistic is it for your idea to be implemented by early 2018? Please describe what resources (if any) you will need in order to ensure a working product by early next year. | This has been done before, with a housing community of 500 people who were asked to prioritize issues for the board of directors to focus on in their 2 year plan. Santa Monica is much bigger, but the deliberative process and underlying technology have already been designed to scale up to larger numbers. Depending on the challenge and the in-person best practices for discussing it, some customization may be necessary, but such work can usually be done in days, with the resources available. |
