This event highlights Neurodivergent and autistic talent. The City of West Hollywood famously celebrates diversity expressed through the arts. However, disability and neurodivergence are historically underrepresented in both representation and depiction in the media. When neurodivergent individuals are portrayed in the media, they are rarely depicted by neurodivergent performers. Stories of the difficulty of living with a disability and inaccurate stereotypes are nearly ubiquitous, whereas stories told featuring neurodivergent characters experiencing joy and sharing their passions are few and far between. Spectrum Laboratory encourages its performers to focus on the topics and art that brings them joy, and our neurodivergent artists come to the stage to share what makes them feel passionate and excited to perform. We are a non-profit organization and operate off of donations and ticketed events such as the one we are proposing in this application. Co-sponsoring this event is a vote of confidence in our neurodiverse artists, and a step forward for both our communities in bringing diverse voices and artists into the forefront of public consciousness. Let our voices be heard!

| How does this event benefit the West Hollywood community and/or the City? |
This event benefits the community of West Hollywood through increased exposure and representation of autistic and neurodivergent voices. Diversity and inclusion is beneficial for everyone in the community, not just those being included. Spectrum Laboratory has a strong LGBTQIA community, including trans and gender nonconforming actors, performers, and writers. Many of our community members who are part of the LGBTQIA community are searching for a place in that community where are their Neurodiverse identities can be represented, accepted, and celebrated. We hope that a co-sponsorship with the city of West Hollywood will provide a place where the intersectionalities of identities can be showcased and celebrated to the benefit of the entire community.

The City of West Hollywood has cosponsored our screening of Boys Don't Wear Dresses, a film made by our autistic actors, filmmakers, writers, and directors about the intersectional experience of being trans and autistic. It was held on April 15th, 2023.
