Describe your idea and how it can help Santa Monica Santa Monica provides both residents and visitors with a broad spectrum of services, information, community outreach programs, health and human services and dozens of other initiatives driven by City Hall and the Chamber. Communicating the availability of these services, promoting local business and building community amongst residents can get lost in the overwhelming number of channels for communication in social media, print, television. Today's world is driven by video. More people watch videos on their mobile devices than any other platform. In addition, cable / satellite companies are challenging their requirement to provide Public Access channels to local government, further limiting a video distribution platform. Video addresses the economic gap, the language gap, age gap and technology gap. We have found that communicating ideas is much easier through video then text. We believe that a Santa Monica City Video Network (SMCVN) that is distributed on multiple platforms (online, mobile, OTT) with topics segmented into programming for targeted audiences will increase awareness, civic engagement and meet the need to communicate the goals, plans for every City department. More than just a YouTube channel, each Department will have management over their content, messaging with the ability for the Marketing Director to oversee and unify content. During our discussions with various departments during the last Hack the Beach meeting, we discovered that within each group there exists individuals who already create videos, 'PSAs' and other content that include information, fun video or passion projects. The growth potential for this project during the next five years and beyond are limitless. The integration of Augmented Reality Virtual Tours, real-time interaction and links to smgov.net; content from Santa Monica City College Film Departments, video programming that is promoted to riders on the the Big Blue Bus. QR codes that assist with the installation of the mobile application on devices, our ideas for application of this project are truly to endless for us to include in this application.
What stage is your idea or project in? Active company/ post-revenue
What needs to happen to launch your product? Please list all resources (hardware, software, licensing, legal/regulatory, funding, partnership or support from the City, data, etc.) required to launch your program. We are not seeking funding and their wouldn't be a startup cost. Providing this project would require limited development as the majority of the platform is already launched. We view this as a Partnership with the City of Santa Monica to drive all aspects of Marketing for the City. What is most important to us is a Champion within the City who can provide the resources to drive the acquisition, creation or initiatives that produce video content.
How realistic is it for your idea to be implemented by early 2018? Please describe what resources (if any) you will need in order to ensure a working product by early next year. We can completely reach an implementation by early 2018 with our current resources.
