Please Describe the Incident Thoroughly | City of Chelsea Department of Pubic Work contractors or employees performed side walk removal/repairs on Friday March 10. I was informed by my tenants that the employees who removed the side walk broke the front step to my home which was cracked. Further the second step was loose as a result of the side walk related damage. I promptly came to the property to evaluate and took photos. I ensured all tenants were aware about the damage to the steps and performed any mitigation necessary. I contacted the City of Chelsea emergency help line over the weekend on 3/21/2023 and on Monday 3/23/2023. I tried to contact multiple people in the city help line and department of pubic works to urgently repair the steps. Ultimately, I was successfully able to contact Mike Sandoval on Tuesday March 14 by telephone. He gave me the contact for department of public works on Tues March 14 and assured me that the city would repair the steps. I emailed Mike Sandoval and Cate Fox-Lent Commissioner of Department of Public works on Wednesday March 15 with the description of events and all photos. Per Commisioner Cate Fox-Lent's email on Wednesday March 15 to me "our contract is scheduled to complete the sidewalk work tomorrow. They will fix the stairs at that time." This email from a leader of the City indicates that the steps would be repaired and the city is taking responsibility for this. Unfortunately the sidewalk was filled in however the stairs were not repaired despite the assurance of Commissioner Cate Fox-Lent. I contacted Commisioner Cate Fox-Lent by email on Saturday 03/18, and received a reply on Monday 03/20 that "The workers did their best to return the step to level so that it is still operational." Unfortunately, no step repair for the first or second step was performed as per my evaluation. Despite this being an urgent matter requiring the city to replace the first and second steps, this has been needlessly delayed. This is the legal responsibility of the city to replace these steps to their original condition urgently. I the property owner will be the repairing the steps out of my own pocket but expect reimbursement for repairs and for the city to perform replacement of the steps. I hope the city will be more proactive of identifying damages to property owner homes at the time of damage and take any steps needed to prevent safety hazards at the time of damage. |
