Please explain the purpose of this event and why it is important for the City to co-sponsor this event |
Given that there has been a safe sober space supported by the city for years, we are passionate about ensuring that there remains a sober alternative to the typical New Years festivities. Such events are pivotal to both maintaining the sobriety of West Hollywood's sober citizens and in signaling the values of the city itself. We aim to create a party that both captures the reverence of the holiday and the joys of recovery. There will be top notch entertainment, fellowship, and resources for all attendees.
|
How does this event benefit the West Hollywood community and/or the City? |
Providing safe spaces for sober people to celebrate holidays is an invaluable resource for the entirety of the West Hollywood community. West Hollywood has a long tradition of supporting and enriching the sober community with spaces and programming. When considering the city's status as a bastion of queer culture in the nation, we must also consider the fact that the queer community is 3-4 times as likely to experience the ill effects of substance use. This is only compounded by the recent surge in crystal meth use and overdoses. We believe city support will be a powerful endorsement of recovery and healthy living, as well as to a counterbalance to the troubling trends we see nationwide.
