Please explain the purpose of this event and why it is important for the City to co-sponsor this event |
The purpose of this open panel discussion is to bring visibility and hope to the Iranian LGBTQ community. The panel will consist of six generations of Iranian LGBTQ activists who have sown the seeds of change for us. This is particularly important at a time when we Iranian LGBTQ activists are given death sentences in Iran for promoting equal rights. Should the City of West Hollywood decide to co-sponsor this panel, it would carry a lot of meaning for Iranians inside and outside of Iran to know that there is a city that will advocate on their behalf.
|
How does this event benefit the West Hollywood community and/or the City? |
Since many Iranian LGBTQ have made West Hollywood their home and safe haven in the past few years, an event like this would make Iranian LGBTQ residents feel that they are a visible member of the community and not a hidden minority. Most of the activism done by our panelists have been done in secret over the past five decades. This is a chance for the broader LGBTQ and ally community to hear their stories and be inspired by their work. Additionally, we feel this is a great opportunity for the City of West Hollywood to create community for those living inside and outside its borders. Also, since our organization and programming are nonreligious and nonpolitical, it reaches a wider number of people in the LGBTQ and ally community.
